Automations

The emails you send every time, sent for you.

A welcome series for every new reader. The ARC copy and the review reminder. The note on a reader's anniversary. Build them once, switch them on, and Penomaly walks each reader through, one step at a time.

A welcome automation drawn as a flow chart: send an email, wait two days, send an email, wait three days, then a condition on a tag. Readers with the tag get one email; the rest get another and are tagged.

What starts one

Every automation begins with a trigger.

  • A reader signs up through one of your pages

The obvious home for a reader magnet welcome flow.

  • A reader joins a list

However they arrived: a page, an import you chose to include, or a partner tool through the API.

  • A reader is tagged

Tag someone by hand, or from another step, and they start.

  • A date arrives

A fixed date, or a yearly anniversary of a date you keep on each reader.

  • A reader clicks a link in a campaign

Follow up with the readers who showed interest.

  • A custom field changes

React when something you track about a reader changes.

What it can do

  • Wait

A set time, or until a particular date in a named time zone.

  • Send an email

Built in the same composer as your newsletters, with the same book blocks, tracking and unsubscribe handling.

  • Tag and set fields

Add or remove a tag, or set a custom field, as a reader moves through.

  • Email me

A note to you when a reader reaches a step, such as a new ARC application.

  • Condition

Send a reader down a yes path or a no path by tag, list, custom field, or whether they opened or clicked the last email.

  • A/B split

Send a share of readers down each of two paths and compare.

There is also a webhook step for authors who connect other tools. Every email an automation sends goes through the same checks as a newsletter, so an unsubscribed or bounced reader is never emailed.

Two you will probably build first

  1. A welcome flow

Trigger on a signup through your reader magnet page. Send the welcome, wait a few days, send the story behind the book, wait again, then introduce the series. On a list with double opt-in, it starts when the reader confirms.

  2. ARC follow-up

Publish an ARC team application page with your agreement text and extra questions. Trigger on joining the ARC list, send your BookFunnel or other reading copy link, wait, and send the review reminder. Add an Email me step to hear about each new reader.

ARC Readers ties it together: a round per book with spots, a waitlist and approval rules, a private page for each reader with their download link and a place to report their review, and automations that start when a reader is approved, when a review is due, when they report it or when they miss it.

Plain rules, said up front

Switching an automation on does not reach back to readers who were already tagged or already on the list, except for a date trigger that covers a whole list. Readers you import only start your automations if you tick the box that says so, which starts unticked. A reader goes through once unless you allow them to repeat it. Automations can be built on the free plan, and they send once you are on a paid plan.

Penomaly is in a private beta.

Access is opening in stages, a few authors at a time. Join the waitlist for occasional updates on what is being built and an invite when there is room for you.
