The swap market

Swaps, arranged where you send.

Newsletter swaps usually live in three places at once: a marketplace, a spreadsheet and the email you build by hand. In Penomaly the listing, the booking, the conversation and the promo block are all in the same account.

A swap calendar for October. Open days are green with the promo types offered, partly booked days are amber with one booked, and past days are grey.

Your listing

Each of your lists can have its own listing. You decide what you offer and when, and partners see your pen name rather than your own.

  • Genres in, genres out

Say which genres you take, and which you do not, so requests that would not suit your readers never arrive.

  • A weekly rhythm

Pick which days you send and what each day offers: mentions, a feature or a solo, with how many places each day holds.

  • Your rules, written once

How far ahead partners can book you, how many days ahead you need their link, how often the same author can appear, your cover rules and anything else partners should know.

  • Close a day when life happens

Close any date with a private note to yourself. Partners only see that the day is not available.

Numbers you can believe

Swap partners decide on list size and opens, and on most marketplaces those numbers are whatever the author typed in.

  • Verified from real sends

If you have sent to a list through Penomaly in the last 90 days, its subscribers, opens and clicks are worked out from those sends and shown with a tick. Nothing to type.

  • Self-reported, and labelled that way

Authors who send from another platform can still list. Their numbers are shown as self-reported, with the platform named, until they send through Penomaly.

  • A record, not star ratings

Every listing shows how many booked promos the author has actually sent. Promos sent through Penomaly are confirmed automatically when the email goes out.

  • Verified sending domain

Authors who send from their own verified domain get a badge saying so.

How a swap works

  1. Find a partner

Browse listings by genre, sorted by list size, with subscribers, opens, clicks and each author’s record side by side.

  2. Pick a date on their calendar

Their open days and formats are on a month calendar. Choose a date, a format and the book you want promoted. Requesting a date holds the place, so nobody else takes it while you wait.

  3. They accept by booking their side

Your partner accepts by picking a date in your list, so both halves of the swap are booked in one step. Requests nobody answers are cancelled after five days.

  4. Talk it through in the swap

Each swap has its own message thread, and both of you get an email for new requests, replies, acceptances and cancellations.

  5. Add the promo to your email

When you open a campaign, the swap promos due are waiting in a card. One click adds your partner’s book block, built from their own book library: cover, description and buy link.

  6. Prove it went out

Sent through Penomaly, it is checked and marked sent for you. Sent from elsewhere, paste the email's web version link and Penomaly checks your partner's book is in it.

Your swaps and your own newsletters sit on one calendar on your dashboard, and each of your books has a launch view listing every promo booked for it, with partner, list size, date, format and status.

Free to use

You can list, browse, request, accept and message on the free plan. Sending is what needs a paid plan, which includes sending your side of a swap. Authors who send from another platform can still swap here and mark their side as sent.

The market is for authors with an account. Paid promos, where an author sells a placement rather than trading one, are planned and not built yet.

Penomaly is in a private beta.

Access is opening in stages, a few authors at a time. Join the waitlist for occasional updates on what is being built and an invite when there is room for you.
